About the SMS Choir Program
SMS is home to 5 choirs, including 6th Grade Choir, Treble Choir, Mixed Choir, Concert Choir, and Show Choir! 6th Grade Choir is open to all 6th grade students. Treble Choir and Mixed Choir are open to all 7th and 8th grade students. Concert Choir and Show Choir are auditioned ensembles for 7th and 8th grade students.
In choir, students learn various choral repertoire, including music representing different historical periods, languages, genres, styles, and cultures - all of which have elements that support the Colorado Music Standards and IB objectives. Students will also develop their musicianship by learning to read music and sing scales, triads, and intervals, all while learning how to sing healthily with proper tone. The SMS Choir program strives to provide all students with a sense of belonging, where they can unapologetically be themselves. A significant focus of the choir program is about creating a safe space for all students to express themselves through music. Teaching empathy, kindness, self-care, balance, confidence, teamwork, accountability, work ethic, respect, and creativity all play a part in our rehearsal process.

Ms. Hansil believes that all students deserve a chance to find their voice and for their voice to be heard - it only takes one voice to make a difference. She believe that singing in choir will instill the values and confidence that students need to be kind and successful human beings. Ms. Hansil was inspired to pursue teaching through her own choir and theatre teachers in middle school and high school.
Ms. Hansil is from Roswell, GA, but currently lives in Longmont, CO. In her spare time, she enjoys baking, reading, and being outside. You can also find her singing in the Rocky Mountain Chorale and petting every dog she sees.
